Mexi Log Fest, now in its ninth year, is a premier longboarding competition that brings together surfers from around the globe to rotating destinations in Mexico - this year was located in Mazatlán, Mexico’s Los Pinos surf break. Held in the second last week of May, this year’s event delivered a unique blend of high-caliber surfing, community spirit, and cultural celebration.
Vaer participated in the 2024 contest as a presenting sponsor, a partnership that furthered our growing reputation in the surf community, and helped reflect our love for the sport and the cultural traditions it represents.
We were able to connect with
Kris Hall at the event, a Southern California native and renowned surfer & shaper. We’re huge fans of his surfing and his hand-shaped surfboards. Kris wore the
Vaer DS5 Meridian Navy throughout the week, putting it to good use both on land and in the water.
What is Mexi Log Fest?
Participants in Mexi Log Fest are required to ride single-fin longboards that are longer than 9'2", feature soft rails, and weigh over 15 pounds. The absence of leashes adds an extra challenge, particularly in the sizeable 8-10 foot waves of this year’s event.
Mexi Log Fest isn’t just about competition; it’s a week-long celebration that embraces the rich traditions and vibrant culture of Mazatlán. The event fosters a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, drawing a diverse crowd of local surfers, international participants, and spectators who come together to enjoy the sport, the community, and the beachside setting. The festival includes various non-competitive activities such as live surfboard shaping, beach cleanups, group art projects, and more, making it a holistic celebration of surfing culture.
Israel Preciado, the event organizer known as El Patrón, summed it up perfectly: "Mexi Log Fest is not just a pro longboarding competition. It’s a gathering of fun people and good vibes, and a platform to give opportunities to not only Mexicans but people from across the globe."
On the final night, the festival crowned its champions, Keani Canullo and John Michael Van Hohenstein from Oahu, Hawaii. Their victories were celebrated with live music, dancing, and, of course, tequila tasting, stretching the festivities late into the night.
Being part of Mexi Log Fest was a reminder of why we at Vaer love longboarding and the community that surrounds it. The craftsmanship, the connection to nature, and the shared passion for the sport are all values we hold dear. We’re proud to support events that celebrate these traditions and look forward to many more waves and good times ahead.
